From the Psychotic to the SublimeThe Lake Waikaremoana TrackDay 5, Page 7: Waiharuru to Hopuruahine Landing I can hear voices up ahead Lesleigh and Dakin are here already in the boat, and a few of the earlier sprinters, waiting for the official transport. We pull out some food, including a bit of smoked trout left over from last night. Divine! As if on cue, a small and slightly bedraggled figure appears from the track. The water taxi arrives. We head off after lunch and Lesleigh and Dakin hang a rod over the back and we do a tiki tour of the bays. This is the shit boat, which travels around the various establishments on the lake emptying sewage containers. Reminds me of a similar land-based firm up our way who go as McDonald's Takeaways. We can approach quite close to these birds. The clouds out the back of the boat are quite spectacular. Again, I wish I was a geologist. I'd like to travel around here with someone like my geologist friend, Jim, and soak it all up. He reckons he can no more walk or drive through a landscape without analysing its geology than I can without naming its plants. Day bloody 1.... Dakin is starting to pay more attention as we get closer to the landing. As we step ashore I finally allow myself the luxury of a few stiff muscles. We have another walk scheduled for tomorrow, to Lake Waikareiti, but right now, a hot shower will do nicely. Thank you Lesleigh and Dakin, thank you very much.
